Amazon has just announced a “singles” section. That is a place for lower-priced, shorter works. At first glance, it seems like a nod to our shorter-attention-span world, but they make an excellent point.
A story should only be as long as it takes to tell the story. Padding a story up an extra 10,000 words so it has the right “heft” to sell is a bad idea. Especially in an e-book world.
This is doubly interesting for me, as a view the Shardlore world as a serialized work, and not so much an Epic Fantasy. I know where it starts and I have a few stops planned, but where it ends? I know not. Not yet any way.
I may have to think on this as I work my way through book one and into book two. Maybe this is a good way to ease people into a new series or for a new author to break-in. A cheap “single” book that people will be willing to try out. Not too long and not expensive, there’s little commitment on the readers part.
Intrigued. Definitely intrigued.
